Whitmer Thomas is a comedian, actor and musician from Gulf Shores, Alabama, who built his hour-long HBO special, The Golden One, around the beach bar where his mother sang. The set mixes stand-up with synth-pop songs about grief, family and the Gulf Coast, and it works because the jokes and the songs are about the same wounds. He records for Hardly Art, released the EP Can't Believe You're Happy Here in 2022, and performs regularly with his longtime collaborator Clay Tatum.
