Steph Davis: The Prayers of Black Folk

Steph Davis is a marimbist and cultural activist whose solo performances draw on the traditions of the Dagara and Lobi people of Northern Ghana alongside African American spirituals and art song. The Prayers of Black Folk is her original marimba and gyil program built around ancestral prayer and remembrance, pairing works by composers like Florence Price and Errollyn Wallen with traditional Lobi gyil music. It plays more like an intimate, meditative recital than a typical band show.
