George W. Russell Jr. is a Pittsburgh-born jazz pianist and chair of the Harmony and Jazz Composition Department at Berklee College of Music, where he has also received the school’s Most Distinguished Faculty Award. His playing fuses jazz harmony with the gospel sensibility he developed playing at church without sheet music as a child—a soulful, rhythmically grounded style that bridges sacred and secular music. He has performed with Stanley Clarke, George Duke, Ernie Isley, and Lenny White.
