“The Harmony of Hassler” at First Lutheran Church in Boston: choral and organ music by Hans Leo Hassler (1564–1612), the German late-Renaissance composer who studied in Venice with Andrea Gabrieli and carried the Italian polychoral style north. His chorale settings — among them the melody later used for “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” — run straight through the Lutheran tradition to Bach.
